School Bus, Motorhome Accident; A Close Call

School Bus and Motorhome Accident causes four students, among six people to suffer minor injuries Wednesday afternoon when a brand-new motor home crashed into a Venus ISD school bus in rural Johnson County. The accident site was near the intersection of Farm-to-Market Road 157 and County Road 507, about seven miles west of Midlothian.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said 73-year-old Don Pierson of Canton, Texas, was behind the wheel of the luxury motor home when it rear-ended the school bus in Venus at 4:30 p.m. Gloria Pierson used the car they had been towing to drive her husband to Methodist Hospital in Mansfield. The Piersons had just purchased the 2011 Entegra Cornerstone Coach on Tuesday. The accident caused extensive damage to both the back of the school bus and the front of the motor home, which retails for well over $500,000. No citations were issued by troopers immediately following the accident.

School bus driver Joshua Stepp, 34, of Cleburne, was taken to a hospital for treatment along with two 17-year-old girls, a 14-year-old boy and a seven-year-old boy. Fortunately, all of the injuries were described as non-life threatening and reports are that one broken leg and a lot of bruises and cuts was the worst of it. I am glad to hear this because given the amount of damage, this accident could have resulted in much more severe injuries.

Truck Accident Explosion Causes Death & Roadway Damage

As a Dallas personal injury attorney, I was distraught by the news of another unnecessary DWI related death following an explosive truck crash which occurred in the early hours of Monday morning.
At approximately 2:30 am Monday, a pickup truck was driving the wrong way along I-30 westbound and collided with a gasoline tanker truck just west of Beach Street in Fort Worth. Emergency officials report that the big rig came to a stop over Sycamore Creek, where it burst into flames. By the time fire crews arrived on the scene the fuel-carrying 18-wheeler was engulfed in flames. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the trucker died in the wreck, while the driver of the pickup was transported to hospital to be treated for injuries. The accident caused significant delays for motorists heading into downtown this morning as a large portion of the interstate was shut down, forcing commuters to find alternative routes. TX DOT is anticipating two lanes of Interstate 30 to be closed for up to a month as repairs are made to the bridge.

The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission has opened an investigation into where the 23-year-old pickup driver was drinking before he was involved in a fiery crash.

Fuel that spilled from the tanker ignited, melting steel beams and concrete in the I-30 bridge over Sycamore Creek. Repairs to the roadway and the bridge could take four to five months. The freeway will be reduced from four westbound lanes to two between Beach Street and Riverside Drive during repairs.
This tragedy demonstrates just how dangerous it can be to get behind the wheel after hitting the bars. One person is already lost their life and a massive hazard and inconvenience has been created to the public at large.

If you were involved in a truck or DWI accident, chances are we have handled a similar claim for another client. Car Accident, 18-Wheeler, Motorcyle, DWI Accident, Truck Accident: Car Seat Safety: Rear Facing Until AGE 2

Car Seat Safety: Rear Facing Until AGE 2

The American Academy of Pediatrics, in its Monday journal in Pediatrics, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued separate but consistent new recommendations that children should ride in rear-facing car seats longer, until they are 2 years old instead of 1.
Both organizations say older children who have outgrown front-facing car seats should ride in booster seats until the lap-shoulder belt fits them. Booster seats help position adult seat belts properly on children's smaller frames. Children usually can graduate from a booster seat when their height reaches 4 feet 9 inches.  Children younger than 13 should ride in the back seat, the guidelines from both groups say.

These recommendations are based on evidence from crashes. For older children, poorly fitting seat belts can cause abdominal and spine injuries in a crash. A 1 year-old is five times less likely to be injured in a crash if they are in a rear-facing car seat rather than a forward-facing seat, according to a 2007 analysis of five years of U.S. crash data. Because toddlers generally have relatively large heads and small necks, in a front-facing car seat, the force of a crash can jerk the child's head causing spinal cord injuries.

Car seats have recommended weights printed on them. If a 1-year-old outweighs the recommendation of an infant seat, parents should switch to a different rear-facing car seat that accommodates the heavier weight until they turn 2, the pediatricians group says. Thankfully, manufacturers of car seats are helping parents by making
car seats with higher weight limitations and thus allowing them to be used longer.
