DART Escalator Mishap Injures Students

An escalator malfunction at the DART Mockingbird Station has hospitalized five kids and two adults.

The group of female students were part of a large group in town from the Quinlan Independent School District to sing in a choir and visit a museum. Officials said the escalator inexplicably sped up just after noon Thursday, and that the riders tumbled down the stairway when someone hit the emergency stop button.

As many as 20 people have been said to be injured with the most serious of the injuries being a broken leg. Dallas Fire-Rescue said most of the injuries were bumps and bruises.
Four of the injured students were taken to Children's Medical Center in Dallas by ambulance and a fifth was taken by her parent, who was also a chaperone.

The escalator has been shut down while it's inspected. There is an elevator and stairs that riders can use in the meantime.

DART has said the incident has not disrupted train service.
